Did the Greeks write obituaries?

I love the movie "Serendipity" with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. It's the story of how soul mates find each other through a sequence of serendipitous events 10 years after spending a magical night together. I am not one to watch something that will depress me. I always go for the movie that you can predict the ending within the first 7 minutes. I happened to watch “Serendipity” again the other day. The phrase that made me think was when John Cussack's buddy in the movie says to him "The Greeks didn’t write obituaries. They only asked one question after a man died: Did he have passion?"

I did Google whether Greeks truly did write obituaries or not because I found that to be fascinating. It turns out that they did but this phrase has nevertheless made me think about passion and what if it is missing in our life.

In one of the classes I took, our homework was to write our own obituary. I am originally Lebanese and that is culturally mortifying for us. We don't do well facing death or anything about it. After getting over that piece of it, I decided to give this exercise a shot to see what I would come up with. I can't tell you that I remember what I wrote those few years ago but I can tell you that kind of question makes you think about your life and what you're doing with it.

There’s something to be said about living with passion or fulfilling your dharma to its fullest. I had a chance to reevaluate my life and the priorities I was giving things again this last summer when I almost lost my life. I can truly say that the experience of losing a baby at 20 weeks and almost losing my life in the process was a great kick in the butt to de-clutter what doesn’t work anymore. I said to a friend of mine tonight that I feel like the page has been turned and God has given me a pen to write the story of the rest of my life the way I want. It’s great to be the author and editor of your life!

So if I were to die today would I be content with what my obituary will read? I’m not sure that I can say yes at this moment. What’s missing you may ask? I guess that’s the question that I’m going to have to answer for myself now that I’m thinking about it. I can tell you that humility is one thing I’m trying to have more of, I’m always trying to be a better listener, I’m trying to allow more and do less, I’m trying to be calm and in my center more often … just to name a few things off the top of my head.

So give this exercise a chance and write your obituary after you read this post. It may be fascinating to see what ends up on that piece of paper.

Inspired by Abraham

I love the teachings of Abraham channeled by Esther Hicks. I have read so many of their books because I find that they are very empowering and uplifting. I also subscribe to their daily quote which you can do from their website at www.abraham-hicks.com.

The following was today’s quote:

"In order to help someone who's in a very different vibrational frequency, you've got to adjust your vibrational frequency so that they can hear you. And if we were standing in your physical shoes, we would not adjust our vibrational frequency down—ever. We would not introduce more resistance in our vibration for any reason whatsoever, because disconnecting yourself from resources does not give them more to eat." – Abraham

I found this quote to be fantastic. How many times do we feel that we need to complain about something because our friends are? We feel that we need to make them feel like they’re not the only ones with this issue. I used to have a friend who loved to complain about her husband and in turn, I would find myself complaining about my husband although there was truly nothing to complain about. If our friend comes over complaining about work then we feel the need to chime in and rattle off why we hate what we do as well. If the kids are an issue guess what our kids become an issue too and so on.

We are not doing our friends any favors by lowering our vibration to match theirs just to empathize. What would serve them more would be to maintain our elevated vibration allowing them to pull up to ours. My friend says that she finds certain things to be an inspiration to her and she constantly thrives to get there. She never dwells on what’s not there instead she’s constantly talking about the potential of what’s coming. It’s an awesome approach to life which truly eliminates the need to complain.

We do a nightly prayer with our kids where we begin by thanking God and Jesus for all the great things that came to us that day. After a few months of this nightly ritual my oldest son has taken it on fully. Last night he was thankful for his delicious lunch at school, the dentist’s appointment where he got a toy and the slumber party he was having with his brother. My youngest who will be 5 next month is starting to catch on but is not quite there yet; he may thank Jesus for a new toy one night but then spend 7 not saying a word. This concept of an elevated vibration is clearly evident in the actions of my kids. It took for my husband and I to maintain that vibration of being grateful prior to going to bed for a few months, then our oldest chimed in and now our youngest is starting to catch on.

Think about Abraham’s quote: "disconnecting ourselves from resources will not give them more to eat". If we disconnect ourselves from resources all that happens is that we end up with fewer resources. On the other hand, if we maintain our positive, life is abundant attitude then those around us have no choice but to adopt that attitude as well. Nothing will make the flow of life come to us more than being in gratitude.

Listening ... what a gift to me!

I attended a fantastic tennis camp this weekend held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. I went with 7 other fabulous women. We were there for 2 nights and played tennis for about 11 hours. Needless to say my body is somewhat sore right now but I can’t even begin to describe the rejuvenation I feel today. This is a trip that is totally up my alley. If I’m going to be away from my husband and kids then it’s going to be for something that will leave my energy soaring. Nothing does that more than exercise, a spa, great dinners and the company of wonderful people.

I tried something different this weekend though. Usually I am the story-teller in any situation I’m in. I feel it’s natural for me to talk because I do it all the time whether it’s teaching a class or doing a reading or guiding my kids … etc. This weekend I truly understood the meaning of the expression “if words are silver then silence is golden”. I found myself listening to others a lot more this weekend. The gift was getting to know some of these ladies a lot better than I ever would have before and learning a lot from their experiences. Trust me if you were there this weekend you wouldn’t say I was totally quiet because that’s next to impossible for me but I’m working on it.

I’ve realized through the many readings that I’ve done that sometimes people just want me to listen. I used to feel like I hadn’t done my job when someone came to me for a reading and I didn’t talk 90% of the time. Anytime I interject myself and what I would like to see then I get myself in trouble. I had to take a step back to realize that this is their hour with me and it’s their choice as to how it will look. Some people need to listen the whole time, some need to talk to find their comfort and some need a combination. Personally, if I go to get a reading I like to listen to what the reader is feeling and seeing. That doesn’t necessarily mean that I take on everything he or she might say but I feel it does offer me a different perspective which may be something to consider.

I did this exercise once in a group where we spent 2 full minutes listening to someone talk about what they love about themselves. The fascinating thing was that it was an extremely difficult task for both people. The person talking couldn’t think of that many great things to say about themselves and the person listening wanted so badly to agree with the other and praise them as well. Obviously that’s not a realistic conversational scenario but it certainly does put emphasis on the art of listening.

Personally, I am constantly trying to be a better listener. I feel that's how I respect the person talking and their story but more importantly I gain so much more by not interjecting my thoughts and my story.

The straw that broke the camel's back

I was with my boys at the zoo the other day. It was such a beautiful day in Denver that doing something outside seemed totally appropriate. My kids are into reading about the animals that they are seeing now. I read something to them about camels that I have been thinking about since. We all know that camels are used to transport items on their back. What I found interesting was that a camel will refuse to move if overloaded even by only a few pounds. Once the excess weight is removed it will walk for days without needing water.

I have thought about the phrase "the straw that broke the camel's back" ever since. It's not really that the camel's back breaks but that it basically says no to the load it's carrying. I’m starting to really understand what Wayne Dyer said about animals not interfering with their dharma. It’s simple with a camel, its dharma is to carry a huge load and walk across the desert however if you interfere with that by loading it too much then it will refuse to walk.

Of course this made me think about my load and how I'm handling it. Am I saying no when I get overloaded or do I just keep plugging along? Can I afford to get sick one day? I remembered back to the days I was on bed rest where I could do nothing at all yet remarkably the sun still rose every morning and the Earth continued to spin on its axis.

I can truly say that I have gotten better with identifying what is too much for me to handle whether that is physically, emotionally or mentally. One of my friends was talking about sending her kids away to camp this summer and wanted to see if I was going to do the same with my 7 year old. I would have normally said that I would consider something like that but I’ve realized that I don’t do well when my kids are that far away from me so I immediately said “no, doing something like that would stress me out”. She commented on the fact that she’s never seen me stressed and I appear calm all the time. Of course that made me laugh because trust me I have my fair share of not so serene days but I did say that I am getting better at identifying things that stress me out and not even exposing myself to them anymore.

At my book club the other night we were talking about what seems to be the theme of the lessons we are dealing with in this lifetime. I said that mine were boundaries and joy. Boundaries are something that come up for me a lot and saying no to the overload is yet another opportunity to set them. Anything can seem like too much of a load if you take it on grudgingly.

Take an inventory of what you’ve got piled up on your plate and evaluate it. Is it too much for you to handle? Would you rather be doing something else? Keep in mind that everything will continue to be just fine regardless of high you pile things on your plate and whether you get to them all or not.

Who Dat? Drew Brees!

I got to watch Drew Brees, the quarterback of the Saints, on Oprah the other day. By the way, I love Oprah and I admire all that she's done. I don't get to watch her show as often as I'd like but I find that every time I do I get inspired. Drew Brees led the Saints to win the Super Bowl this year. I personally am a Colts fan but I have to admit that there was something in me that wanted the “Who Dat” nation to win this one. After all that New Orleans has been through it was awesome that they got to celebrate a win such as this.

The following answer by Drew Brees is taken off of Oprah's website. She had asked him how he felt about all the critics that said he didn’t have what it takes to be a great quarterback because of his height and shoulder injury … etc:

"Every person in our position has at some point down the road been told by somebody that you can't do it, for whatever reason—you're not talented enough or whatever. Sure, you use that for motivation, but for me it's really about the people that did believe in me and gave me confidence to accomplish what we've been able to accomplish. Those are the people that I play for. ... I just want to make them proud."

I loved that answer and thought about that a lot. How many of us spend our energy trying to prove someone wrong or trying to show them or whatever? Wouldn't it make more sense to do something feeding off of the positive energy that's coming your way? Think about the Saints, Drew Brees said that he felt that the energy of the entire nation was behind them. What fantastic energy to feed off of to propel them forward to a Super Bowl win!

Any time you try to do something because of someone else your energy becomes scattered. I find that when you’re trying to prove someone wrong all that happens is the energy of it festers inside you. When you do finally accomplish whatever it is then you’re like a balloon that got deflated because half the time the other person doesn't even care or remember what they said to you. This actually includes the people who sometimes are well-intentioned too.

At my book club last night we talked about just that; people and their intentions. Although someone’s intention may be coming from a place of love that doesn’t mean you have to take it on. Your parent, sibling or friend may feel like they have your best interest in mind but actually all they are doing is causing anxiety in you if you allow it. I always believe that you are the creator of your Universe not a victim of circumstance.

I would say, look within and realize what it is that you’d like to accomplish and why. Always keep in mind that you can create anything that you’d like provided that you fully believe that you can. I love that Brees took on the energy of the country and led his team to an awesome victory.

Find your champions and allow their energy to propel you as well!

Seize the opportunity!

I've been thinking about opportunity a lot lately. I've recently been accepted into the Hay House New Release Reviewers program. Basically, I get sent a book prior to its release so that I can read and review it. I am going to post my thoughts about the book on this blog. I saw the request for reviewers on Louise Hay's Facebook page one time. I wrote down the email address to send my information to the moment I saw it. I kept it on my desk for a couple of weeks which is when I decided it was time to apply to the program. I do things this way a lot - I just wait to feel when the time is right to do something and then I do it. I feel that I don't regret much this way because I allow things to sit with me and jell in my head for a while.

When the movie, The Secret, first came out I sent a copy to all of my family members. I remember my brother commenting that the movie made it sound like all you needed to do to attract something was to think about it and it'll appear. He suggested that as being very misleading because we can't just sit there and wait for the opportunity to come to us rather we have to go out there and pursue it. Of course, keep in mind that was his opinion of the movie.

The teachings of Abraham which are channeled by Esther Hicks will talk to you about thought being the creator of your Universe. In other words, what you think about you will get. So are they suggesting that we just sit around and think things into existence as well?

I honestly don’t feel anyone talking about the Law of Attraction is telling you to just sit around and wait for things to fall in your lap without taking any action. In other words the Universe will deliver the opportunity but it’s up to you to seize it!

Hay House posted the request for reviewers on Facebook, the Universe delivered that request to me by guiding me to login into my Facebook account at that moment but it was up to me to do something about it. It was up to me to take the time to fill out the application, call Hay House to figure out more and so on.

The key to any manifestation begins with your thoughts about it; a new job, a new car, a baby, a relationship, a Super Bowl ring … etc. Keep in mind too that nothing is too hard for the Universe to deliver to you. It’s up to you to believe that you can achieve it and it will come to you. Know what it is you want to attract first, let the Universe deliver it to you and then do something about it!

Everything in Moderation!

I've been on a major cleanse for the past two weeks. I love doing cleanses! The last time I did a total digestive cleanse was before I got pregnant with my oldest son which was about 8 years ago. I was definitely due for a major one. I take this drink concoction twice a day on an empty stomach which is meant to draw out all the toxins in my body and eliminate them. I was feeling totally fantastic until Saturday night when I indulged in food and drink something I hadn't done for the past 2 weeks. I went from eating salads and grilled fish to having Cajun food with wine. While dealing with the stomach pains, I contemplated the thoughts of moderation and balance.

Life is all about harmony and balance. Life is night and day, summer and winter, fall and spring, up and down ... etc. Life naturally maintains this rhythm without any intervention on anybody's part. Even the maintenance of the boy/girl equilibrium is said to be maintained naturally as well. Our bodies must be in a state of balance to live. Our blood will do everything necessary to maintain the necessary ph for life to be possible. It is up to us to supplement our bodies with proper rest and nutrition so that this process is not so taxing on it.

I think it’s fair to say that we’ve all heard the phrase “everything in moderation is the key” but yet that does not seem to be the norm of how humans do things. I believe moderation is the key to longevity, happiness, a centered life and the list goes on. We tend as humans to go way past moderation into indulgence a lot. While in Maui, Wayne Dyer said that humans are the only beings who tend to interfere with their dharma. Dharma is our life purpose or what we came to earth to accomplish. He gave the example of a giraffe doing nothing else but being a giraffe. Humans are the only beings who overeat, oversleep, overwork …etc. We are the only beings who overdo. How are we to carry out our dharma if we are constantly trying to come back to the balance necessary for life?

My dog, Bones, is turning 17 in May. I thank him for every day he lives and talk to him all the time about it being ok if he wanted to move on into the spirit world. I want my pup to be happy however that may look for me. He was losing weight because he couldn’t eat the dog food quite as well anymore. I was concerned about that so I started cooking for him. Chicken soup is his absolute favorite (what can I say I love my puppy). I made him 2 scrambled eggs tonight for dinner and ¾ of the way through his bowl, he was done and there was no way I was going to get him to eat anymore. I thought about the fact that most animals naturally do not overindulge.

I thought back to Saturday night and realized that if I was going to eat anything heavy while on a major detox, I should have had just a taster and at most ½ a glass of wine instead of 3. You may say that 3 glasses of wine over the course of 5 hours is not a lot but it is for someone whose body was eliminating toxins. During a cleanse, 1 glass of wine is too much as is food that is oily, buttery and spicy.

Moderation in everything is a must for life. When you exercise stop before collapsing, when you eat stop when you are full, when you drink don’t overindulge, when you meditate stop when it’s time … I feel like you get the point.

Trust your gut!

A woman called me to say that she's spent $800 with a psychic and still hasn't gotten the clarity and comfort she was seeking. Although I find that number to probably have been exaggerated, I do feel that she really was struggling. I told her that if she felt the reading wasn't resonating with her then she should have ended it. I'm not sure that she knew what I was talking about; I don't believe she felt that she had any control over the reading or its contents.

A reading is meant to offer clarity and guidance. It's never meant to be scary or burdensome. A psychic or intuitive reading is a collection of messages about your life right now. The psychic tunes into your energy and the messages received should serve to enhance your life or guide you in the right direction.

I find that I'm constantly talking to my clients about meditating daily and trusting their intuition. Our intuition is our gift from the heavens and once honed will enhance the quality of our life tenfold. If we were to check with our gut prior to doing anything then we would only engage in the activities that enrich our lives. When in any scenario rather than instantly responding take 30 seconds to center yourself and then answer. You'll be amazed as to how many times your answer is different than what your knee-jerk reaction may have been. I love to be in a place of acting rather than re-acting. Reacting is not centered at all leaving us second-guessing what we said or did.

There are various ways to receive messages from the Universe; we may know, see, hear or feel what's best for us in any situation. The act of knowing something is associated with our crown chakra, seeing with our third eye, hearing with our ear chakras and feeling with our heart chakra. Chakras are energy centers along the midline of our body. Being that we receive messages in our body it is a must take care of it with good food, plenty of water, a regular exercise routine and plenty of rest. I always suggest a weekly chakra meditation to cleanse, center and balance our energy centers as well. I love the phrase "your body is your temple" because it is so true. You have full control as to how you nourish your body.

The act of meditating daily will help to center and calm you so that you are able to take those few moments prior to reacting. Practice taking the time to think about something and seeing how it resonates with you prior to answering. Also, practice being in silence which will allow you to further understand who you are; for example try turning the radio off while driving or any media off while at home. When in silence you’ll realize that you’re more in tune with what experiences resonate with you when they come your way.
